Making Waves for Autism

Last year, Making Waves for Autism raised over $45,000, allowing for the early launch of Autism Canada's Community Assistance Program.

This year, this challenge is running from May 1-31 and has various ways for you to get involved!

Background

Making Waves for Autism was founded by Kim Inglis in memory of her late cousin, Tyler, whose deep passion for raising awareness and funds for autism was inspired by his young son, who is on the autism spectrum. After Tyler's passing in August 2023, Kim took on a personal challenge to paddle and row 365 kilometers— symbolizing the 365 days a year that autism affects individuals and their families.

Our Partnership

Autism Canada is proud to partner with Kim on this impactful initiative. Thanks to the success of the inaugural Making Waves for Autism event in 2024, which raised over $45,000, Autism Canada was able to launch the Community Assistance Program months ahead of schedule. This program is already making a difference by helping autistic individuals and their families with the costs of essential services and support not covered by provincial health plans.

Get Involved

Building on this momentum, Making Waves for Autism is expanding in 2025 to become a national event. Individuals and teams across Canada are invited to participate and create their own paddling challenges, all in support of autism
awareness and fundraising for autism services. This expansion ensures that Tyler’s legacy lives on and continues to improve outcomes for autistic individuals across the country.

Join us in this incredible journey—together, we can create lasting change, spread hope, and foster inclusion for all.

Let’s make 2025 our biggest year yet!

How it Works

INDIVIDUAL CHALLENGES

Our challenges are inspired by the 365/24/7 impact of autism on individuals and families. Choose the one that speaks to you:

  • 365 Challenge – Paddle 365 km over the month of May. A test of endurance, this challenge symbolizes the daily reality of autism and the unwavering support families provide.

  • 24 Challenge – Paddle for a total of 24 hours throughout May. Break it up however you like—whether it’s an hour a day or longer weekend paddles, this challenge represents the round-the-clock dedication of caregivers and advocates.

  • 7 Challenge – Paddle any distance for 7 consecutive days at any point in May. A great way to build momentum and raise awareness throughout the week!

  • Choose Your Own Adventure – Set a challenge that aligns with your goals and abilities—whether it’s a distance goal, a sunrise-to-sunset paddle, or something completely unique.

TEAM CLUB CHALLENGE: PADDLE 365 KM

Join clubs across Canada in the Making Waves for Autism Team Club Challenge—a high-impact, community-powered event where your paddling club commits to logging 365 kilometers to support Autism Canada.

Your club’s mission: Paddle 365 kilometers collectively between May 1 – May 31, 2025. This symbolic distance represents the 365 days a year that families support their loved ones with autism.

  • Pick a schedule in May that works for your club (challenges can happen anytime between May 1–31, 2025).

  • Rally your team—bring together any self-propelled watercraft (canoes, kayaks, dragonboats, paddleboards, etc) and create a plan to reach your collective goal.

  • Paddle a total of 365 km as a club. Track your distance using GPS watches, apps, or boat logs.

  • Fundraise together through our secure fundraising platform—it’s free and easy to use. Each paddler can share their personal fundraising page with friends and family.
