The Experience of Healthcare for Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder

We are looking for adults with ASD to tell us about their experiences in healthcare. This includes open ended questions on topics such as what makes for good healthcare and doctor-patient communication. Historically, the voices of adults with ASD have not been included in the healthcare research literature, leaving a gap with respect to the unique perspectives, strengths, and challenges that they identify as important from their point of view. This study will add to a small but growing body of research in which adults with ASD inform research in healthcare on their own behalf.

Michelle Wright (PhD Candidate, University of Manitoba), and Dr Janine Montgomery (PhD)

Who can participate:
Participants must be Canadian or American adults (age 20 years and older) who have formally received a diagnosis of ASD (including Asperger’s Syndrome, HFASD, PDD-NOS). They must be able to attend at least some of their healthcare appointments independently and be in charge of making their own medical decisions. Participants must be comfortable reading and writing in English, and have access to an internet connected device as the study is entirely online.

What’s involved:
The study is completely online and will occur in 3 phases. Phase 1: Consists of the letter of informed consent, and – for those who provide consent – a short demographic and screening questionnaire. Phase 2: Individuals who meet inclusion criteria (as screened for in phase 1) will be sent an emailed link to the 6 open-ended long-answer questions about healthcare experiences. Phase 3: Individuals may be contacted to clarify their responses and comment on the researcher’s summary of the data.

Individuals who complete phase 1 will be entered into a draw for the chance to win one gift card ($20 CAD). Individuals who qualify for and complete phase 2 will receive a $40 (CAD) e-gift card in addition to having their name in the draw for phase 1.
